For Immediate Release

Phoenix, Arizona – It would be easy to declare the race in Arizona s Legislative District 25 to be a clear cut race between honest and corrupt; Arizonans would understand that declaration but outsiders would not. All they would know is that the former number two man in the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, the former director of the State Motor Vehicle department, who has been elected to the State Senate and chosen by his colleagues as President of the Senate, is running for this open seat. Slam dunk, right? No!

That man is a disgrace. He received thousands of dollars worth of illegal gifts from a football bowl game association, the giver of which has plead guilty to numerous crimes including illegal gifts to politicians like this one. He was fired by the State of Arizona for covering up felony conduct by Motor Vehicle employees. As President of the Senate he violated the civil rights of critics willy-nilly. He sponsored several huge anti-Mexican Senate bills including the Supreme Court squashed SB 1070. He talks incessantly about the ‘rule of law’ but much of the legislation he introduced was unconstitutional, contrary to the ‘rule of law!’ Lastly, this candidate is so corrupt and out of touch his voters signed petitions to recall him and threw him out of office; his name, Russell Pearce.

Standing in his way is Bob Worsley a hugely successful Arizona businessman who doubles as a fluent-in-Spanish Mormon Church leader that spends his time with Hispanic Mormons that he learned to work with when he served as a missionary in Latin America. He understands new Americans in a way that Pearce never can.

Unlike Pearce, he has no ethical, criminal or nasty political baggage. He runs on a general platform that isn’t exclusively dominated by illegal immigration which, as it turns out, has slowed to a trickle anyway. He does think that a comprehensive approach is necessary to control illegal entry by people who come mostly to work. A work permit program is part of what he thinks is necessary to cut down illegal entries.

It is with great pleasure that Cafe Con Leche Republicans supports Bob Worlsey for the LD 25 Senate seat. In endorsing him, we are not alone. The State Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, the (City of) Mesa Chamber of Commerce, the entire Mesa City Council, and a-half-dozen state senators have all endorsed Worlsey.

One looks through a list of Pearce supporters and one finds scant Hispanic support for Pearce. It’s also noteworthy that Governor Jan Brewer, herself famous for being intolerant of immigrants in Arizona is not inclined to support the recalled former State Senate President, Russell Pearce…

Cafe Con Leche Republicans is a national organization of Republicans who value immigrants and their contributions to the U.S.A. Bob Worsley’s decades of work with immigrants demonstrates he knows them, their problems, their contributions, and their place in Arizona. Winning the general election requires expanding beyond the traditional GOP base. Russell Pearce is a deeply divisive politician who has managed to alienate most conservative Hispanics, who might well hold their noses and vote Democrat rather than vote for a ticket that includes Pearce. On the other hand, Worsley is a solid conservative with a grasp of many issues of importance to Arizonans, and none of Pearce’s baggage or record of extremism on immigration. We are confident that Bob Worsley will be the best candidate to represent the GOP in the November general election.

A year ago, Gov. Jan Brewer was the most high-profile defender of Russell Pearce during his recall.

But today, as Pearce faces a tough GOP primary battle with Bob Worsley, the governor appears to be backing away from the ousted Senate president, and said she has no plans to endorse him.

“I’m not inclined to,” Brewer said today when asked if she would endorse Pearce.

Brewer did not say whether she would endorse Worsley or simply not endorse in the Mesa-based Legislative District 25 primary.

“I haven’t given it any thought,” she said.

Brewer’s lack of support for Pearce is a sharp departure from her position during the 2011 recall campaign against the former Senate president, when she urged support for her “friend and colleague.”

“Once again, it is time to take a stand against those who boycott and hurt our state! We need leaders who believe in securing our border and protecting our citizens. Russell Pearce is that man, and we need keep him on our team,” Brewer wrote in a July 2011 fundraising plea for Pearce that touted his work on SB1070, the landmark illegal immigration law that Pearce sponsored and shepherded through the Legislature.

Brewer was mired in a tough GOP primary when SB1070 landed on her desk in April 2010, but her popularity soared after signing the bill and her three primary opponents dropped out of the race before election day. Many credited the bill, and Pearce, with significantly helping Brewer to victory, and Pearce said after the election that she wouldn’t have been elected if not for SB1070.

But Brewer appears to have parted with Pearce since he lost his November recall election to Jerry Lewis. The governor did not give Pearce one of her tickets to the U.S. Supreme Court hearing on SB1070 in April.

Pearce could not immediately be reached for comment.

The article (below) appeared in today’s East Valley section of the Arizona Republic. The following people wrote this column: Steve and Julie West, John and Dawn Giles, Ross Farnsworth, Dea and Marcia Montague, Randy and Jenny Richardson, John and Jane Wright, Larry and Adele LeSueur, Brent and Linda Ellsworth, Beth Coons, Don and Nansi Hobbs, Damon and Colleen Wheeler, David and Kathy Palmer, Dave Udall, Heather Sandstrom and Mesa Councilman Dave Richins.

Bob Worsley is a good man who has agreed to run for the state Senate from new District 25. We have met him, talked to him, questioned him and are impressed with his vision, his values and his abilities. He is a businessman, not a career government employee or longtime politician.

Bob is a fiscal conservative. He believes in the principles of limited government, limited taxation and a balanced budget. Bob knows how to create jobs, having founded SkyMall and other businesses that have created nearly 1,000 jobs in Arizona. He understands that competition in the free market is more effective in creating jobs and economic growth than are increased government spending and overregulation of industry.

Bob is also a social conservative. He opposes abortion on demand, champions traditional marriage and views the constitutional mandate to provide public education as one of the highest priorities of Arizona government.

For these and other reasons, Bob Worsley has the endorsements of Sen. Jon Kyl; the entire Mesa City Council and many former council members; the Mesa Chamber of Commerce; the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Tourism; the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce; Mesa legislators Rich Crandall, Jerry Lewis and Steve Court; present and past leaders of Mesa schools; and many other of our friends and neighbors.

While in past elections some of us have supported Worsley’s opponent, we believe it is time for a change. His opponent’s record of supporting a sham candidate, claiming phony endorsements, falsely accusing a good man of stealing backpacks from homeless children, accepting thousands of dollars in Fiesta Bowl tickets and freebies from lobbyists, and sending racist e-mail messages do not represent the values of a true conservative.

Abraham Lincoln is quoted as saying: “Stand with anybody that stands right, stand with him while he is right and part with him when he goes wrong.” We invite all who have stood by Bob’s opponent in the past to join with us in supporting true conservative values by voting for Bob Worsley.

I believe law-abiding Arizona gun owners should be allowed to purchase rifles, shotguns and handguns without special permits within the guidelines of Federal laws.

I support existing law and an employer’s right to prevent guns in the workplace. Employers such as Boeing and Intel should be able to set their own internal work policies as well as small business owners.

If I am elected to the Arizona State Senate, I will work to ensure Arizona’s long-tradition of owning firearms is protected and that our existing gun laws remain intact and preserved.
